Under the Sea 2009 (17" x 20" x 9")
This piece depicts the interior of Captain Nemo’s submarine in 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. It is difficult to accurately capture the experience of peering into this little box. One really gets the feeling that they are aboard the vessel. While building it I couldn’t escape the sense that I was building a doll’s house for boys. I hope to continue in this miniature vein for a while before returning to larger projects.
The squid shown in the rear is a real preserved specimen. The LEDs surrounding it and the green plastic covering it make it look very much like a hologram.
Note: This sculpture has a plate of glass covering the viewing area. It was removed during photography to reduce glare.
There are some process images here.
