Back to it
With my shop cleaner and more organized than is customary, I have begun on some new pieces. In my typical fashion they will remain “in-progress” for a while as they all mature together.
This one is a look back at the ever popular “Clog” piece I made a while ago, though this one is definitely more uncomfortable.

I’m still working out how tall he will be and how his body will be supported. Probably on a base of some kind. The trick will be to make his upper body move in some way to justify all the time I spent on making his ankles hinged, sigh.....
It took a while to get the dentures to play nice with the wooden clog. Still, it worked out well, they look like they were made for each other.
Another re-visited theme (above right) due to the popularity of its predecessor “Catmonkey”
It required some crazy mount work to get it to stand on its wooden legs without being too delicate. It is always time consuming to work on wood and metal at the same time. Naturally the heat required for welding does not sit well with bare wood.
And finally, a new kinetic piece in the works. I liked the use of old wooden objects in my “Little Big Man” sculpture so I wanted to try it again on a smaller scale. This one will be based on an old radio as well. I picked up a clock at a yard sale that was the perfect fit for an old ashtray to make a head out of it.
A big part of my work is in restoring the objects that I salvage. In this case, by turning the radio up on its side I had to make a new bottom for it so that it matched the top.
Fussy little mechanism makes the arms swing around in circles. It will also be viewable and make use of the window cut in the face of the radio cabinet. I’m thinking I may back it in velvet to make it seem more heart-like.
Ice cream scoops for shoulders, and garden tools with bicycle parts for hands.
